We’re off on a cross-country jaunt tomorrow to build a fence in Texas. No, not that fence.

Free Bird Meme
KingDavid’s post about seeing a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert got me thinking about the music that I listened to while in high school. Here’s a quick meme on the theme:
Name your five favorite albums or songs from your high school daze….
- Night Moves by Bob Seger
- Dust in the Wind by Kansas
- Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
- Won’t Get Fooled Again by the Who (Okay, that was a year or two before high school, but I always feel better after hearing Roger Daltrey scream.)
- Ridin’ the Storm Out by REO Speedwagon
And for good measure, I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s – and his hair was perfect. Owoooo!

Single Moms Oil Change
Looking for a great weekend ministry? In the area around our church live quite a few single moms. We’re always looking for opportunities to minister to them and their kids, and a few years ago we came up with the idea for a Single Moms Oil Change. It’s been a great tool for helping the needy in the area, as well as giving the guys a chance to get good and dirty.
This weekend we ended up changing the oil for 20 ladies and only stripped one drain plug (change their oil, not strip their drain plugs.) Some of the women were practically in tears that someone would do this for them, and it was clear that many hadn’t had their oil changed for a long time.
I’m not sure how scriptural an oil change is, but it was relatively easy to set up and the women appreciated it. A local garage and auto parts store gave us materials at cost, and let us dump the oil afterward. We’ve had several women and their kids come back to the church over the past few years - and a few have made it their church home. We don’t do it to swell our numbers, but it’s a fun outreach that makes a practical difference for a lot of folks that could use a hand.

Late Thursday Meme, Maybe Early Friday
Thirteen predictions for when I am an old man (in no particular order):
- Two words – rocket boots.
- Our kids will be able to support us in the manner to which we want to be accustomed.
- My book will be done and will have been a major motion picture. Or not. If they still have such things.
- Latest eco-scare? Global cooling. Again. Or was it warming? It changes every few years.
- Still at war with the Caliphate of Eurabia.
- President Bill and his lifemate Leon.
- Evangelicals in America will belong to persecuted underground house churches.
- Mainline churches will ordain and perform marriages for trans-species social bonding units.
- The name of Jesus Christ will be forbidden in any public forum as malicious hate speech. (Don’t worry. He still wins in the end. I read the end of the Book.)
- AlGore and Michael Moore still whining.
- Intracranial entertainment/tracking units are mandatory.
- Gas at $96 a gallon. We still can’t drill in ANWR. No refineries built since the 1960s.
- Last debris from the remains of the International Space Station crashes to earth across Khazakstan.
I tag KingDavid, Karen, Hammerswing, Retired Geezer.

Gun Control is Hitting Your Target
UPDATE: I may have been Snoped (see the comments). We can’t find anthing to corroborate the story below, so we’ll chock it up as an urban legend, though it’s similar to this story, which has been verified:
An overnight home invasion robbery attempt in northeast Harris County ended in a hail of gunfire that left two suspects dead. Investigators said a 17-year-old was home with his cousin when four armed men kicked in the door and started shooting. The teen pulled out a shotgun of his own and fired back at the suspects, killing two of them.
Two other suspects were later caught.
The 17-year-old asked to not be identified. “Truthfully, it was either them or me, regardless of who was on the other side of that door or whoever kicked my door down, it was either him or me,” he said. “I’m thankful to be standing here today. I thank God.” [END UPDATE]
More natural selection in action. (HT: LibertyPost.org)
Home invasion gone wrong for [illegal] criminals
Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez 23 and Enrico Garza 26, probably believed they would easily overpower a home alone 11 year-old Patricia Harrington after her father had left their two story home.
It seems the two crooks never learned two things, they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay shooting champion since she was nine. Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father’s room and grabbed his 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun.
Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor only to be the first to catch a near point blank blast of buck shot from the 11 year olds knee crouch aim. He suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and genitals. When Garza ran to the foot of the stairs, he took a blast to the left shoulder and staggered out into the street where he bled to death before medical help could arrive.
It was found out later that Resindez was armed with a stolen 45 caliber handgun he took from another home invasion robbery. The victim, 50 year old David Burien, was not so lucky as he died from stab wounds to the chest.

Who is the Master of Your Soul?
I liked this post by Gomarus so much that I lifted the whole thing. I didn’t realize that Henley was such a strident humanist and anti-Christian, but it’s pretty evident form his words.
The Invictus by W. E. Henley, is most recognizable from its last lines: I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. Henley was a militant humanist who hated the Christian faith. The word invictus means unconquered in Latin, and the author’s intention in the poem was to shake his fist in defiance at the very thought of a sovereign God ruling over him.
The Invictus by W. E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstances,
I have not winced nor cried aloud,
Under the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears,
Looms but the horror of the shade.
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Around 1900 a young lady that had been greatly enamored with Henley and his humanism got soundly converted to Christ. She wrote a response to Henley’s blasphemy, and set forth the correct attitude of a child of God toward the sovereignty of God. Here is her poem:
Conquered by Dorothea Day
Out of the light that dazzles me,
Bright as the sun from pole to pole,
I thank the God I know to be,
For Christ – the Conqueror of my soul.
Since His the sway of circumstance,
I would not wince nor cry aloud.
Under the rule which men call chance,
My head, with joy, is humbly bowed.
Beyond this place of sin and tears,
That Life with Him and His the Aid,
That, spite the menace of the years,
Keeps, and will keep me unafraid.
I have no fear though straight the gate:
He cleared from punishment the scroll.
Christ is the Master of my fate!
Christ is the Captain of my soul!

Skewering Jerry Falwell
I guess it’s not surprising, with the passing of Rev. Jerry Falwell, that the unhinged should come out of the closet to speak ill of the dead. I won’t glorify the following comments by providing a link to the source.
“Reverend Falwell’s legacy is not about the tenants [sic] of Jesus’ ministry such as healing the sick and standing with the disenfranchised but about shunning and ridiculing those who have suffered and died of AIDS and their families. Many faith leaders today are moving away from his divisive approach and toward the compassion and inclusiveness that Jesus modeled every day of his ministry.”
Hmmm. I’m not sure what ‘tenants’ this guy is talking about, but he seems to imply that the focus of Jesus’ ministry was ‘healing the sick and standing with the disenfranchised.’ No, it was about pointing sinners to the Father and providing redemption to a lost, sinful world.
The author of this comment is close, though. Because Christ had compassion, He could bring the message that all – there’s the inclusive part – have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that there was hope for all through Him.

Great Gift Ideas: Carbon Debits
Tired of whiny eco-deists like AlGore spewing about carbon credits and carbon offsets while they jet off to the next global whining guiltfest? Now there’s a great way to offset the offsets: carbon debits. For a modest fee, these guys will destroy a tree in your name – and send a nice email to AlGore, to boot. Here’s what they say:
On a Mission – Taking Away Al Gore’s Carbon Credits…
We are on a mission to take away every one of Al Gore’s meaningless carbon credits by simply providing carbon debits. Help us make this dream a reality by purchasing one of the packages below. Don’t let Al Gore assuage his guilt with meaningless penance, heap it back on with carbon debits – every one of which we will let him know about.Do We Really Kill Trees?
The short answer is “Yes”. We run a burgeoning business of clearing trees from grasslands so the Antelope won’t be scared. As silly as that previous sentence sounds it is the truth. So, you can have a clear conscience that you removed a terror inducing tree in an effort to improve the antelope state of mind – which makes them better targets during hunting season. Although we don’t completely follow the logic of the game and fish department on this, we go along with it.

Bad News For Families in Colorado
Colorado’s first term (and hopefully, last term) governor slammed families yesterday, bowing to the homosexual lobby and abstinence opponents.
Gay couples OK’d to adopt; abstinence-only sex ed cut
THE GAZETTE, May 15, 2007 – 12:38AMDENVER – Gov. Bill Ritter signed new laws Monday, among them, one that allows same-sex couples to adopt and one that eliminates abstinence-only sex education.
The first-year Democratic governor had come under pressure from religious groups to veto the measures, but said in a statement he thinks the laws will help children — the sex-ed bill by preventing unintended pregnancies and the adoption bill by giving kids a better chance to grow up in a stable home.
“This law gives children in a one-parent family a chance to grow up in a two-parent home,” Ritter said. “We must do all we can to strengthen families and provide children with as stable an environment as possible. This law will give children a better chance to succeed.”
[Now there's a bit of twisted logic.]
House Bill 1330 by Majority Leader Alice Madden, D-Boulder, allows the joint adoption of children by unmarried couples, including gays and lesbians, unmarried heterosexual partners and relatives seeking to help single mothers. Colorado becomes the 10th state in the country to allow such second-parent adoption.
House Bill 1292 by Rep. Nancy Todd, D-Aurora, requires that school districts use scientificbased standards if they teach sex education. It allows for abstinence lessons but mandates that districts that offer them must also teach about contraception and sexually transmitted diseases.
