FOXNews.com - ‘Oh Great’: Astronaut Loses Tool Bag During Spacewalk

HOUSTON — A spacewalking astronaut accidentally let go of her tool bag Tuesday after a grease gun inside it exploded, and helplessly watched as the tote and everything inside floated away.

It was one of the largest items ever to be lost by a spacewalker, and occurred during an unprecedented attempt to clean and lube a gummed-up joint on a solar panel.

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper was just starting to work on the joint when the mishap occurred.

She said her grease gun exploded, getting the dark gray stuff all over a camera and her gloves. While wiping off herself, the white, backpack-size bag slipped out of her grip, and she lost all her other tools.

“Oh, great,” she mumbled.

If I dropped a toolbag from 250 miles up, I’d probably say something a bit more colorful

Bill Gates is the Antichrist

Does anyone know how to set up file and printer sharing on a mixed XP-Vista wireless network? I can’t seem to get the Vista desktop and XP laptop to recognize each other. It may be a firewall issue, because both can see the internet, but not each other.

Millions on Welfare Are Counting on Me…

Category: miscellaneousSteve @ 08:55 am

… so I’m going back to work. As of 1 December I will be returning to the ranks of the gainfully employed. God is good, all the time.

Get a job - how else are we going to pay for Obamunism if we don’t all do our part?

It’s National Ammo Day!

Category: miscellaneousSteve @ 08:26 am

Ah, it’s one of my favorite holidays…

banner Its National Ammo Day!

Yes, it is today, but don’t let your inability to get to your friendly neighborhood ammo dealer today discourage you from participating. All the ammo you buy this week counts.

You know what to do: Buy 100 rounds (or equivalent for hand-loaders).

If you cannot purchase ammo:

1. Write a letter to your Representatives to let them know you support the Second Amendment, and would not support taxation schemes and gimmicks that limit or restrict a person’s ability buy ammo.
2. Join or contribute to a gun rights organization.

Facts:

* Number of firearms in America: 228,000,000
* Number of firearm owning households: At least 50,600,000
* Projected firearm owning households in America: 60-85 million
* Number of guns used in crimes: 450,000
* Percentage of guns used in crimes: 0.09%

Over 50 million law-abiding, gun owning households committed NO crime today… but collectively, we stop 2.5 million crimes per year… 6,849 a day!

Fact: Every day, 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun.  In less than 0.9% of the time is the gun ever actually fired.

Cult Dance ‘Repulsive to Public taste and Morality’

Category: miscellaneousSteve @ 18:07 pm

The Indian supreme court has banned a Hindu religious cult, the Anand Marg, from staging a dance ritual in public.

The majority vote upheld a state government order from 1987 in West Bengal, which banned the practice due to law and order concerns.

The cult maintains the Anger Dance - or Tandav - involving daggers, snakes and human bones is part of their religion.

The dance routine has been described as repulsive to public taste and morality and likely to cause fear and annoyance.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Cult dance banned by Indian court.

Hmmm.  I didn’t know Britney and Madonna had gone to India.

…or Maybe Paul Ryan (R-WI)

Category: news and politicsSteve @ 14:11 pm

Man, two political posts in one day.  I thought the elections were over…

From newly elected representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), in the Wall Street Journal yesterday:

Our party has become too fearful of our own ideas. Since 1997, congressional Republicans began a steady retreat from principled leadership to political expediency. A party built on spending discipline and government reform succumbed to the siren songs of government expansion and earmarked giveaways. Republicans squandered the opportunity to limit and reshape the relationship between the federal government and the individual.

I ran on these bold ideas and innovative solutions in a congressional district carried by Barack Obama — yet I received 64% of the vote. I challenge my colleagues to rethink political risk taking. Taking on our most serious fiscal challenges will restore relevancy to the Republican Party and will keep alive America’s commitment to freedom and prosperity.

I’m glad to see that some of our elected leaders get it.  (HT:  togetrich)

Sarah Palin 2012?

Category: news and politicsSteve @ 13:29 pm

Palin 2012It was simply a matter of time before rumors started flying that Sarah Palin was seeking to run for President in 2012.  In an interview with Greta Van Susteren, Gov Palin said,

VAN SUSTEREN: I would be remiss if I didn’t ask this — 2012, you know what’s going to happen. We’re going to have a 2012.

PALIN: We are going to have a 2012. I don’t know who is going to be a part of it.

You know, I have — faith is a very big part of my life. And putting my life in my creator’s hands — this is what I always do. I’m like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I’m like, don’t let me miss the open door.

Show me where the open door is. Even if it’s cracked up a little bit, maybe I’ll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don’t let me miss an open door.

And if there is an open door in ‘12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I’ll plow through that door.

But I can’t predict what’s going to happen. I can’t predict what’s going to happen a day from now, much less four years from now.

Refreshingly, Palin makes no bones about being a social conservative, something John McCain was definitely not.  Looking back at election stats since the Reagan years, it’s clear that when Republicans run as conservatives, they win.  When they move to the center, they don’t.  And when they get in power and then spend like drunken sailors, they lose dramatically.  (It’s also interesting to note that when Republicans put together a ticket, they take the big tent, all-things-to-all-people approach, whereas Democrats go for the as-liberal-as-humanly-possible approach.)

I sincerely hope Palin runs, and that she is able to create the grassroots and Republican National Committee support that she will need to put her over the top.

For now, I’ll give our president-elect some time and see whether he attempts to recreate this country as a repressive socialist welfare state.  If he marches down that road, he’ll only make it easier for Gov Palin in the next election cycle.

“Klingons don’t ‘SCRAM’.”

“I see they do limp.”
