I had an earlier post at the old site showing what’s either an orange-breasted falcon or a bat falcon watching shipping on the Panama Canal.  I clicked the Canal’s webcam link today and caught two of the critters, with a tall ship making the passage in the background.  Anyone know what the ship might be?

  1. No idea what that ship is.

And the whole OBF vs. BF identification problem is driving me nuts. I just spent way too long comparing pictures online… I found some great birding blogs. But, I really can’t tell, via the pics, which bird is which. Grr.

  3. I know those birds, I see them hunting by the Miraflores Locks very frequently. They are BAT FALCONS. OBFs have much larger feet.

  6. Hi again,
Steve, yes, the other picture is also a bat falcon.

I work with Orange-breasted Falcons, and I can tell you that there should not be a debate with these specific birds seen on the web cam. They are bat falcons. The picture is good enough to show some differences that indicate that they are Bat Falcons, but I have also seen them in real life. Regards.
