Bush Throws Rumsfeld to the Wolves

Category: news and politicsSteve @ 23:06 pm

RumsfeldAt one time I thought George Bush was a man of honor and conviction.  He’s spent six years telling us (rightly so) that we must stay the course in Iraq and in the War on Terror.  Last week he responded directly to a reporter’s question, stating that Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney were staying on their jobs for the next two years.

Two years have passed quickly for the president.

I respect the president for what he’s done in the past, but pushing Secretary Rumsfeld out of the boat at the request of the Democrats was an act of absolute cowardice.  Who’s next?  Michael Bolton?  Condaleeza Rice?  Laura?

He was for Don Rumsfeld before he was against him. It looks like he cut some sort of deal with the Dems, offering up Rumsfeld’s head in return for…I don’t know. Perhaps he wanted to avoid hearings, subpoenas, etc.

Either way, Rumsfeld gone should be good for the troops. He didn’t know what he was doing.

Maybe so. I disagree that Rumsfeld was bad for the troops. “Stay the course” was working, but the media rarely showed successes in Iraq, so it was relatively easy to make it appear (from 5000 miles away) that it was turning into a morass.

The President shamelessly caved to the Dems. Look for Iraq to be dismembered pretty quickly.

Bolton’s on his way out. That’s my guess.

And, I think Rummy was *great* for the troops — it must have been wonderful to know that someone was pulling so hard for them, advocating so strongly for them, at home. A local radio newscast I heard the day Rumsfeld was ousted interviewed a bunch of military members and families, and all had positive words to say about R. The commentator even said, with surprise in her voice, “None of the military members we interviewed were happy to see him go.”

I don’t know how great Rummy was for the troops since there have been more dead soldiers every month since the war started. October had the highest level of U.S. casualties. Doesn’t seem like he’s too good for the soldiers. What did he do that was so good for the soldiers? Maybe I’m missing something.

Puh-leeze. I think you’re buying in to the media vulture feast. Rumsfeld has always been clear and consistent about giving the troops what they need to get the job done. President Bush saw an opportunity to deflect cricism and threw Rumsfeld aside.
