Evil Union vs. Kevin Anderson, Eagle Scout

SEIU was for Obama? Ya don't say...

I’m not a union fan.  My dad was a UAW member at Caterpillar Tractor for 40 years.  I can safely say that he (and the family) derived no tangible benefits from his union membership, except frequent strikes that left us strapped, occasionally at Christmastime.  So when I hear about a union threatening an Eagle Scout candidate and Allentown, PA over a service project, I can’t say I’m surprised.

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city’s largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” Balzano told the council.

Balzano said Saturday he isn’t targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city’s decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said “there’s to be no volunteers.” No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

“We would hope that the well-intentioned efforts of an Eagle Scout candidate would not be challenged by the union,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski in an e-mail Friday. “This young man is performing a great service to the community. His efforts should be recognized as such.”

Balzano said Saturday the union is still looking into the matter and might cut the city a break.

“We are probably going to let this one go,” Balzano said.

Anderson, a junior and varsity soccer player at Southern Lehigh High School, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 301 of Center Valley.

He got the idea for the trail while taking hikes along the partially complete, 165-mile Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. He noticed there were a few missing connections to the trail in Kimmets Lock Park, which is on the Lehigh River near Dauphin Street. He already has logged 250 hours trying to carve out a walking and biking trail along the river.

“I decided to do my part in completing this part of the trail. In that way, others could enjoy walking along the river, without having to walk on the busy road,” Anderson said in an e-mail Friday.

This is the same SEIU that threatened voters and even roughed up its own members.  Unions may have served a purpose at one time, but that time is long past.

British Scouts No Longer Allowed to Carry Knives

Scout Master flaunting 'knife culture'

There are times I hold out hope for Britain, and then I see things like this and shake my head. Boy Scouting – even in Britain – teaches responsibility and leadership. It also teaches boys to use knives safely and effectively.

Scouts banned from carrying knives

Scouts have been told to be slightly less prepared than usual. Penknives may have formed as much part of the scouting experience as badges and campfires, but according to advice from the Scout Association they must no longer be brought on camping trips, except when there is a “specific” need.

Modern Britain’s knife culture, including the rise in fatal stabbings, has been cited by troop leaders – although some have countered that the code contradicts the tradition that Scouts are to be trusted for their honour.

The advice, published in the official in-house magazine, Scouting, says that confusion over the legality of carrying a knife in public has made it necessary to revise the rules.

Dave Budd, who trains Scouts on the safe use of a knife, said that the rise in knife crime – up by 50 per cent in just one year – had made “clarification” of the guidance necessary.

He wrote: “Scouts often have the need for a good knife, and in the early days every Scout was actively encouraged to put a knife on their belt.  Sadly, there is now confusion about when a Scout is allowed to carry a knife.

“The series of high-profile fatal stabbings highlighted a growing knife culture in the UK. I think it is safest to assume that knives of any sort should not be carried by anybody to a Scout meeting or camp, unless there is likely to be a specific need for one. In that case, they should be kept by the Scout leaders and handed out as required.”

The Scout Association has defended its position, arguing that even those who pledge to do their duty for God and country cannot be immune from Britain’s contemporary knife culture.

I thought Scouts was being attacked in the US, and it is, but apparently the attacks are worse and more effective in the UK. Two years ago at the Scouting 100th Anniversary Jamboree on Brownsea Island, Scouts were forbidden to eat meat for fear that it would offend the vegetarians in the population.  Scouting UK caved to the pressure.  Get involved in Scouting; hold onto your values; fight for what’s right.

Camping and SOA, what fun…

Category: blogging,scoutingSteve @ 22:10 pm

Tomorrow we’re off the the Crags on the back side of Pikes Peak with the boys and the Scout troop.  I get back Sunday noonish and jump on a plane to DC for SOA training.  What’s that mean to you?  Not much, probably.  The camping will be a lot more fun than the SOA training, but at least I will finally be a Certified SOA Professional.  Woo hoo.

Posting has been way light for awhile.  Between the job and some web hosting issues I haven’t time or access to blog for a bit.  But all is well.  Many thanks to Levi at CricketSoda for getting things rolling again!

Coming Back From Camp

Category: scoutingSteve @ 12:51 pm

Camp Laramie PeakWe had a great week at Camp Laramie Peak, which is in the Medicine Bow National Forest in east central Wyoming. It was hot and dry, and it cost me a torn ligament in my knee, but I have no complaints. This was the first time Son-2 and I have been to Scout camp, though Son-1 went last year to a different camp. I highly recommend it. The boys worked hard and piled up a slew of merit badges, including climbing and shooting.

Back in Town Again

Category: scoutingSteve @ 17:08 pm

Camp Laramie PeakHad a great week in the wilds of Wyoming with 200 Scouts. I’ll post some pics in a bit. Everyone came back in one piece except yours truly, the victim of a vicious Scout Master vs staff volleyball game. The knee will heal eventually, but the important point is that we crushed them four games in a row.
