Food for a Week
Ever wonder what families around the world eat in a week and how much it costs? Peter Menzel took a look and published the results in Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. It’s also available as a photogallery on the Time site. The menu is as varied as you might expect and weekly spending varies from a high of $500.07 (Euro equivalent) in Germany down to $1.23 in a Chadian refugee camp.

Wow. I found that profoundly interesting. It makes our appx $175/week in food expenditures seem downright thrifty.
Not too surprisingly, the families who spend the least are the ones who make pretty much everything from scratch, and those whose bill is the highest have a lot of pre-packaged items.
I found it really interesting that two of the cultures who eat the most fresh fruits & vege (Italy & Mexico) also drink a lot of soda.
The ones that looked most appealing to me, personally, are from Bhutan, Ecuador, and Mongolia, which semi-oddly, are amongst the cheapest.
