Bears 2, Terrorists 0

hungry bear Bears 2, Terrorists 0If you’re a terrorist, don’t try to make pudding in a bear’s cave.  Bears generally have their own ideas of what to eat.

A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.  Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar.  The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise – police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked.

It is thought to be the first such incident since Muslim separatists took up arms against Indian rule in 1989.   The militants had made their hideout in a cave which was actually the bear’s den, said police officer Farooq Ahmed.   The dead have been identified as Mohammad Amin alias Qaiser, and Bashir Ahmed alias Saifullah.

News of the attack emerged when their injured comrade went to a nearby village for treatment.  “Word spread in the village that Qaiser had been killed by the bear,” another police officer said.

A joint party of the police and army personnel went into the forest and collected the bodies of the two militants.  Police say they also recovered two Kalashnikov assault rifles and some ammunition from the hideout.

The bear couldn’t be reached for comment.

That’s One Way to Hunt Bears

Category: miscellaneousSteve @ 09:45 am

King David would have you believe that he is ‘concerned’ about bears wandering into his campsite in the Boundary Waters region of northern Minnesota next month.  I think it’s a clever ploy to divert attention from his latest adventure – trapping bears in buckets.

KingDavid gets his bearFRAZEE, Minn. — A bear with a plastic jar over its head led police on a six-day chase through the forests of Hubbard and Becker counties before it was shot and killed, state wildlife officials said.

Officials had hoped to capture the wild black bear — whose head got stuck inside a 2 1/2-gallon plastic jar — but decided to shoot the animal after it wandered into the city of Frazee during the town’s busy Turkey Days celebration.

“When it got into town, our main concern was public safety,” said Rob Naplin, the Department of Natural Resources’ area wildlife supervisor in Park Rapids.

The bear was foraging for food, perhaps at a Dumpster, when its head got head stuck in the clear, plastic container. Naplin said he wasn’t sure of the container’s original contents but said it looked like a jar for bulk candy or popcorn.

While the bear could breathe, it couldn’t eat or drink and was likely suffering from dehydration and hunger. “I’m sure there was high anxiety and frustration with its predicament,” Naplin said. “It is (a sad story).”

There was no evidence the bear was baited by hunters, Naplin said. The legal baiting season doesn’t open until Aug. 15. The bear season opens Sept. 1.

Rogue Pickup Kills Bear

From the Missoulian:

Pickup truck kills 700-pound griz near Lincoln

By JOHN CRAMER of the Missoulian

A 700-pound grizzly bear was hit and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday near Lincoln. The fatality was another example of the threatened species expanding its range and population in western Montana, where the human population and highway traffic also are increasing.

The number of bears reported killed in road accidents so far this year – at least six grizzlies and 30 black bears – is unusually high for western Montana. “More bears and more people and cars – those two things are colliding,” said Chris Servheen, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s grizzly bear recovery coordinator.

“These bears are pushing further and further out (of the Northern Continental Divide ecosystem) and reoccupying former territories,” Servheen said. “It’s really tragic this one was killed in such a worthless way.

Apparently, no humans were involved, just a pickup and a bear.  Not sure what the truck had against the bear.

Actually, the thing that ticks me off here is the obvious preference for creatures over humans.  Was the driver injured?  Killed, maybe?  That’s not important to these folks.  A few comments here tell the story:

“Poor guy [meaning the bear]. Big machinery shouldn’t be near our wilds.”

“Highway 200 is a death trap for all kinds of wildlife…elk, bear, deer, wolves etc. [No mention of people here, either.] Add that to the fact that it’s still ‘macho’ and a status symbol to have the biggest, baddest, fastest truck speeding down 200 in the dark. [Ah, here's the reference to people - testosterone-laden good old boys."]

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gaiea-worshippers ran to take care of the bear before they looked to see if the driver was injured.

Suicidal Bear

Category: miscellaneousSteve @ 10:40 am

Blog Idaho has an amazing series of pics from the rescue of a bear near Truckee, CA.  The story goes that bear was on the bridge when he was startled by two oncoming cars and jumped over the side.  I’m thinking that his job was outsourced to Bombay and he couldn’t take it anymore.
