Killing Time?
“O LORD, make me know my end
and what is the measure of my days;
let me know how fleeting I am!
Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths,
and my lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath!Surely a man goes about as a shadow!
Surely for nothing they are in turmoil;
man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?
My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:4-7, ESV)
This passage - and my kids - have always reminded me that time passes quickly by and that I need to make the most of what time I’ve been given. What do we waste our time on? Needless disputes? Lots of silly knees-bent running around advancing behavior? Churchy stuff? It comes down to Christ’s question to Peter: Who do you say that I am? That question, and our response to it, should drive our behavior and our sense of priority. Remember Paul’s plea in Philippians? He said, “I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.” Stop arguing about needless things and get on with the business of the Gospel. Man, I need to keep re-learning that…
